How the planner works

The visibility window is calculated from your latitude, hemisphere, and the date you choose. The planner finds the next full moon on or after that date and estimates the moonrise time based on typical sunset patterns for your region. Times are rounded to the nearest five minutes.

The direction to face is estimated from the sun's seasonal position. A full moon rises roughly opposite the sun, so in summer the full moon rises toward the southeast, and in winter toward the northeast. The compass on the planner page shows the approximate azimuth.

The viewing window accounts for horizon obstruction. If you live near buildings or trees, the moon will appear later than the base estimate. The planner adds time based on the obstruction level you select.

Limitations

This guide provides approximate times for planning purposes. Actual moonrise can vary by 10 to 30 minutes depending on your exact location, local terrain, and atmospheric conditions. For precise times, consult an almanac or astronomy app with your exact coordinates.

Weather is not included in this guide. Always check a local cloud forecast before planning an outing.
